Into this<\/span>
As the chalk faces smile<\/span>
As Mrs. Death laughs<\/span>
As the elevators break<\/span>
As political landscapes dissolve<\/span>
As the supermarket bag boy holds a college degree<\/span>
As the oily fish spit out their oily prey<\/span>
As the sun is masked<\/span>
We are<\/span>
Born like this<\/span>
Into this<\/span>
Into these carefully mad wars<\/span>
Into the sight of broken factory windows of emptiness<\/span>
Into bars where people no longer speak to each other<\/span>
Into fist fights that end as shootings and knifings<\/span>
Born into this<\/span>
Into hospitals which are so expensive that it’s cheaper to die<\/span>
Into lawyers who charge so much it’s cheaper to plead guilty<\/span>
Into a country where the jails are full and the madhouses closed<\/span>
Into a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heroes<\/span>
Born into this<\/span>
Walking and living through this<\/span>
Dying because of this<\/span>
Muted because of this<\/span>
Castrated<\/span>
Debauched<\/span>
Disinherited<\/span>
Because of this<\/span>
Fooled by this<\/span>
Used by this<\/span>
Pissed on by this<\/span>
Made crazy and sick by this<\/span>
Made violent<\/span>
Made inhuman<\/span>
By this<\/span>
The heart is blackened<\/span>
The fingers reach for the throat<\/span>
The gun<\/span>
The knife<\/span>
The bomb<\/span>
The fingers reach toward an unresponsive god<\/span>
The fingers reach for the bottle<\/span>
The pill<\/span>
The powder<\/span>
We are born into this sorrowful deadliness<\/span>
We are born into a government 60 years in debt<\/span>
That soon will be unable to even pay the interest on that debt<\/span>
And the banks will burn<\/span>
Money will be useless<\/span>
There will be open and unpunished murder in the streets<\/span>
It will be guns and roving mobs<\/span>
Land will be useless<\/span>
Food will become a diminishing return<\/span>
Nuclear power will be taken over by the many<\/span>
Explosions will continually shake the earth<\/span>
Radiated robot men will stalk each other<\/span>
The rich and the chosen will watch from space platforms<\/span>
Dante’s Inferno will be made to look like a children’s playground<\/span>
The sun will not be seen and it will always be night<\/span>
Trees will die<\/span>
All vegetation will die<\/span>
Radiated men will eat the flesh of radiated men<\/span>
The sea will be poisoned<\/span>
The lakes and rivers will vanish<\/span>
Rain will be the new gold<\/span>
The rotting bodies of men and animals will stink in the dark wind<\/span>
The last few survivors will be overtaken by new and hideous diseases<\/span>
And the space platforms will be destroyed by attrition<\/span>
The petering out of supplies<\/span>
The natural effect of general decay<\/span>
And there will be the most beautiful silence never heard<\/span>
Born out of that.<\/span>
The sun still hidden there<\/span>
Awaiting the next chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n
